More about expedition 5, June 2005
Mike Henry | |
Works at: University of California, Santa Barbara Research in the South Pacific: Mike is studying the physiology of crabs, among other animals. One of the chemicals commonly found in vent fluid, sulfide, is toxic to all animals. So animals need to develop some mechanism to avoid being poisoned by the chemical. Crabs can detoxify sulfide by converting it to another chemical, thiosulfate. Mike will be investigating how detoxifying sulfide impacts the metabolism of crabs, and comparing this to what he has found in other deep-sea and shallow water sites. |
